The Bridges of Madison County

With a soaring score and a heart-breaking story, The Bridges of Madison County is a touching and powerful start to our 2023 season.

MAODS is proud to present the North of England Premier of this Tony Award-winning musical with a score by Jason Robert Brown (Parade).

Robert James Waller’s tale was brought to life in the 1995 film starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood. This is a sweeping romance about the roads we travel, the doors we open and the bridges we dare to cross; it will leave you breathless.

Based on the best-selling novel and developed by the Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning creative team of Jason Robert Brown (The Last Five Years, Parade, Songs for a New World) and Marsha Norman, The Bridges of Madison County captures the lyrical expanse of America’s heartland along with the yearning entangled in the eternal question “What if…?”.

This beautiful moving story will whisk you away to Iowa, USA. Francesca Johnson is a beautiful Italian woman who married an American soldier to flee war-ravaged Italy.  As her family heads to the 1965 State Fair, she’s looking forward to a rare four days alone on her Iowa farm.

Robert Kincaid, a ruggedly handsome National Geographic photographer, pulls into her driveway seeking directions; what happens in those four days may very well alter the course of Francesca’s life.

Monday 24th April to Saturday 29th April 2023.
